Procedure in practice

When you enter a doctor’s surgery, you will usually be greeted by a medical assistant at the reception desk.

Have your health card ready. This is scanned at the doctor’s surgery every three months.

Sometimes you will need other documents, such as your immunisation record. It is best to ask the doctor’s surgery what you need to bring with you before your appointment.

Tell the receptionist if you have an appointment and why you have come.

You will then be sent to the waiting room. Your name will be called when it is your turn.

If you have made an appointment, the waiting time is usually short. If the practice is very busy and you have not made an appointment, you may have to wait longer in the waiting room.

Sometimes you may have to come back to reception after the doctor has treated you. The receptionist will then give you the necessary prescriptions or referrals. You can also make further appointments directly.
